Marketplaces & gig platforms

Identity verification for marketplaces and gig platforms

How to verify sellers, drivers and gig workers during sign-up without slowing down onboarding on a two-sided platform.

Two-sided platforms live or die on trust in the supply side — sellers, drivers, service providers — without making sign-up so slow that people abandon it. Identity verification for a marketplace has to solve both problems at once: confirm who someone is, and do it in a flow that doesn't feel like a wall between sign-up and the first transaction.

Know Your Seller, in practice

“Know Your Seller” (KYS) or “Know Your Driver” verification confirms a supply-side participant is a real person holding a genuine ID, matched by a live face and liveness check, before they can list, drive or accept work on the platform. It's the same underlying checks as any other identity verification — document read, barcode/MRZ cross-check, liveness, face match — applied at the point a new seller or worker joins, rather than after a problem surfaces.

Onboarding without adding friction

The hand-off is built for how people actually sign up: someone starting on a desktop gets a QR code and scans it with their phone, which is where the camera work happens; someone already on their phone gets the flow directly. Either way it completes in a few minutes, and a signed webhook tells your platform the moment a result is in, so you can gate the next onboarding step (accepting their first listing, activating driving status) automatically instead of manually reviewing every sign-up.

  • Hosted verification page with your own branding, so the flow feels like part of your platform, not a hand-off to a third party.
  • QR hand-off from desktop to phone, so a seller who starts on a laptop finishes on the device with the camera.
  • Signed webhook on completion, so your platform can automate the next onboarding step.
  • Per-check verdicts, so your trust and safety team can see exactly what passed or failed, not one opaque score.

Scaling with your supply side

Whether you're onboarding ten sellers a week or five hundred, the flow is the same REST API call and the same applicant experience — pricing scales per verification rather than requiring a new integration or a sales conversation as volume grows. Verification results are delivered by signed webhook. Activity Ledger entries for a standalone ShieldID API account are coming soon; today, ledger entries exist only for verifications run through a Trust Ledger (or other Crown Stack) integration.

Getting started

Sandbox keys are free and never billed, so your team can build and test the full onboarding flow — including the webhook integration — before it touches real sellers or workers.
