Fintech and lending

KYC for fintechs and lenders, built for Canada

Loan applicant identity verification that runs in the browser or the app, catches a borrowed or synthetic identity before it reaches underwriting, and writes every check to a record you can hand to a regulator or an auditor. Hosted on infrastructure we control. Sandbox sessions are never billed.

The problem

Digital onboarding moves fast. Fraud moves faster.

A lending product that approves in minutes needs an identity check that keeps up with it, without turning into a manual review queue.

The application looks clean

A name, a date of birth, an address and a SIN that all check out on paper. The document behind them is a stolen or purchased identity, or fields stitched together from more than one real person.

The manual queue grows

Every application your team cannot clear automatically becomes a person opening a PDF, squinting at a photo ID, and guessing. It is slow, inconsistent between reviewers, and does not scale with a marketing spend.

The regulator asks later

Months after a loan is booked, someone asks how the borrower's identity was confirmed. "We looked at a photo of their licence" is not an answer a compliance lead wants to give twice.

A worked example

A $15,000 personal loan, applied for at 11:40 p.m.

Fictional, to show the shape of the flow. No real applicant, lender or loan is involved.

  1. The application

Aisha finishes a loan application on a lender's site from her phone. The form asks for her name, date of birth and address, then hands off to ShieldID's hosted verification page with those details attached as the expected values to match against.
  2. Capture

Aisha photographs the front and back of her Ontario driver's licence, then a short selfie video. The PDF417 barcode and the printed face are read and checksummed against each other; a mismatch between the two is flagged, not averaged away.
  3. Liveness and match

A guided challenge — blink, turn, return to centre — is tracked on 478 facial landmarks over multiple frames, so a photo, a recording or a mask does not pass. The live face is then compared with the document portrait and reported against a fixed decision line.
  4. Fraud signals

Anti-spoof, deepfake and 3D-mask checks run on the selfie; document tamper scoring runs on the ID. Each result comes back on its own, not folded into a single opaque score, so underwriting can see exactly what did and did not check out.
  5. The decision, and the record

ShieldID reports the per-field and per-check verdicts back to the lender's system by signed webhook. The lender's own rules engine decides what to do with the loan. The verification — every check, the outcome, who initiated it — is entered in the Activity Ledger. The ID images are purged automatically on a seven-day default timer; the record of what happened stays.

What matters most for lending

The checks an underwriting team actually leans on

Every check below runs on every verification. None of it is a paid tier you have to remember to turn on.

Document verification

Canadian and US driver's licences, passports, permanent-resident cards and provincial photo ID, read front and back. An unfamiliar document is read field by field, never refused at the door — useful for a newcomer applicant whose ID a rules-based scanner would otherwise bounce.

Data extraction, cross-checked

Name, date of birth and address are compared against what the applicant typed into the loan form. A mismatch between the application and the ID is exactly the kind of signal a synthetic-identity ring produces, and it is reported as its own field, not buried in a summary score.

Face match and liveness

The face on the ID is matched to a live face on the applicant's own phone, behind a guided liveness challenge. This is what stops a borrowed or purchased identity document from being used by someone who is not its owner.

Fraud signals, every time

Anti-spoof, deepfake, mask and document tamper checks run on every session and are reported individually, so a reviewer sees which specific signal raised a flag instead of a single pass/fail gate.

Activity Ledger

Every verification, every sign-in and every export is entered in an append-only record, enforced by the database. It is the paper trail for the file, not an afterthought bolted on for an audit.

Watchlist screening

Sanctions and watchlist checks against major lists are available as an account-level add-on alongside identity verification, for programs that need it as part of their AML control set.
Add-on

For disputes and audits

When a decision is questioned, the ledger answers first

A lending file gets reopened: a borrower disputes a decline, an examiner samples a quarter of applications, an internal audit asks who touched what. The Activity Ledger is where that conversation starts.

Append-only, enforced by the database

Entries can be added. They cannot be edited or deleted — not by your team, not by ShieldID. That is a property of the database itself, not a policy someone could quietly override.

Who acted, and when

Every entry records the actor — a person or an API key — the action, the outcome and the timestamp, so "who verified this applicant and what did the engine report" has a direct answer instead of a reconstructed guess.

Searchable, filterable

Filter by actor, action, outcome or date range to pull exactly the entries a compliance review or a borrower dispute needs, instead of exporting everything and redacting by hand.

Today the ledger records verified and failed verification outcomes, sign-ins and API-key activity, and audit exports. Per-view and per-download events for ID images, a dedicated decision event, purge receipts and a self-service CSV export for your team are coming soon.

Integration options

Fits where you already collect the application

Most lending teams start with the hosted flow at the point they would otherwise ask for a document upload, and move to the API once volume justifies it.

Hosted verification page

Send the applicant to a ShieldID page with your branding once their loan application is submitted; they verify on their own device, then land back on your return URL with the result attached.

Signed webhooks

An HMAC-SHA256-signed callback tells your underwriting system the moment a result is in, retried automatically if your endpoint is briefly unavailable, so a decision does not sit waiting on a poll.

One REST API

Create a session, read the status, fetch the full result. A handful of endpoints cover the whole applicant-facing flow, so a first integration is a day's work, not a quarter's project.

Sandbox, never billed

Build and test your underwriting integration against sandbox sessions at no cost, with the same fields and events a production session returns, before a single real applicant goes through it.

Said plainly

What ShieldID is, and is not, for a lending stack

Worth stating directly, because a fintech buyer will ask.

ShieldID is the identity layer

It answers one question well: is this a real person, holding their own genuine government ID. It sits underneath your underwriting rules, your credit-bureau pull and your own fraud model, not in place of them.

Watchlist screening is an add-on

Sanctions and watchlist checks are available to accounts that add them; they are not bundled into every plan by default.

Bank-account verification is not available today

ShieldID does not verify bank accounts or income today; that capability is coming soon. If your program needs it now, pair ShieldID's identity check with your existing bank-verification or income-verification provider.

Privacy notes

Built for a regulated file, not just a demo

A lending applicant's ID is sensitive on its own terms. Here is exactly what happens to it.

Hosted on our own servers
ID images, extracted fields and results are processed and stored on infrastructure we control, not a public cloud provider.
Purged on a short timer
ID images are purged automatically, seven days by default, configurable. The verification record outlives the images.
Encrypted
Date of birth is stored encrypted and ID images are encrypted at rest.
Designed to align with PIPEDA
Minimum collection, a short retention window and a searchable access record are the controls we build to; "designed to align with" is deliberate wording — no certification is claimed, because none exists yet.

Vs. the manual way

What changes when a reviewer stops eyeballing photos

A category comparison, not a claim about any specific vendor.

Objections

What a compliance lead asks before signing off

"Where are your SOC 2 and ISO badges?"

We do not hold them yet, and we do not print ones we haven't earned. What you can verify today: self-managed hosting, not a public cloud, automatic image purge, encrypted images at rest and an append-only ledger you can read inside the product.

"Does this satisfy our FINTRAC or AML identity-verification obligations?"

ShieldID gives you a documented, repeatable identity check with a record behind it. Whether it satisfies a specific regulatory method is a call for your own compliance program and counsel to make — we do not offer legal advice, and we will not tell you it's a box already ticked.

"Our fraud team wants bank-account verification too."

Not available from ShieldID today; it is coming soon. Pair ShieldID's identity check with your existing bank or income-verification tool in the meantime — we do not pretend to cover it now.

"What if the applicant's ID is unfamiliar — a newcomer's foreign licence?"

It is read field by field instead of refused outright, which is exactly where rules-based scanners tend to lock out real applicants. You see what verified and what didn't, per field.

What you see

Every applicant checked, field by field.

The borrower verifies during the application. Your team sees each field's source and every check on its own, not one score to trust or ignore.

Illustration with sample data: an applicant's phone in the hosted verification flow, and the ShieldID portal showing the result for Arjun Mehta, Canadian passport, Loan application LA-20931, with the fields read from the ID and twelve checks.
