Applicants & the businesses that ask for ID
Secure ID sharing for applicants
How applicants share an ID safely: a private link on their own phone, an encrypted connection and automatic deletion of images after seven days.
Asking an applicant to email a photo of their driver's license puts a copy of it in two inboxes, often for years. A hosted flow lets them share the same ID with much less exposure.
Why email and chat are a poor way to collect ID
An emailed photo sits in the sender's sent folder, your inbox, any shared mailbox and any backup of them. Nobody decides when it is deleted. If any of those accounts is compromised, the ID goes with it.
What changes with a hosted flow
- The applicant opens a private link on their own phone and photographs the ID there. Nothing is sent by email.
- The connection is encrypted in transit.
- ID images and selfies are deleted automatically seven days after upload by default.
- The result stays in your account, and every document view and export is entered in an append-only ledger.
- Verification runs on ShieldID's own servers in Canada.
What the applicant sees
They are told what is being collected and why before they begin, and they accept the terms of the session. The flow takes a few minutes and is available in English and French, among other languages.
For the business asking
Holding less is easier to defend. If you keep only the result and not the image, there is less to protect and less to disclose if something goes wrong.
