Anyone who needs to check an ID remotely

Online ID check and ID verification, explained

What an online ID check involves: reading a government ID, matching the person's face and proving they are really there, on their own phone.

An online ID check lets you confirm who someone is without meeting them. The person uses their own phone, and you receive a result with the reasons behind it. This is what happens at each step.

What happens, step by step

  • You create a session and send the person a link.
  • They photograph the front, and the back where needed, of a government photo ID.
  • They take a short live selfie and follow a liveness prompt.
  • ShieldID reads the document, compares the face with the ID photo and checks that a live person is present.
  • You receive twelve per-field verdicts, each with its evidence, in your dashboard or by signed webhook.

What is being checked

There are three questions. Is the document readable and consistent, including its barcode? Does the live face match the photo? Is a real person present rather than a photo or a recording? Showing the evidence for each verdict means a person reviewing a borderline case can see what the system saw.

What an online ID check is not

It is a way to gather and check identity evidence, not a ruling on whether to accept someone. Decisions stay with your team. We also do not publish accuracy percentages that we have not measured on real, consented traffic.

Trying it

Sandbox sessions run the whole flow with test documents and are never billed, so you can see exactly what your applicants will see.
